Free Form Crochet 101

One of my following workshops for FPG will be free-form crochet. I see it as Transformative Magick, in that you start out with one thing in mind and end up with something altogether different. The true magick comes from being able to let go and let your creation manifest.

Tip 1: Learn what “freeform” means

Freeform crochet, often referred to as scrumbling, is a creative process where you're free to form your preferred yarns and stitches, working them in any direction without the constraints of a pattern or rules. It's a versatile technique used to craft artistic pieces, garments, accessories, and more. While it allows for rule-free creativity, you may still opt for a structured plan to navigate your freeform crochet projects.

Tip 2: Find freeform crochet patterns and recipes

Although freeform crochet lacks specific patterns, numerous patterns are available. This is because individuals are eager to demonstrate the steps they took to create their unique freeform projects. By replicating these projects, you can acquire the necessary skills to eventually craft your own freeform crochet designs.

Tip 3: Look for freeform crochet inspiration

Even as you venture into creating your own designs, there's no need to begin with a blank canvas. You can draw inspiration for your freeform crochet by exploring the myriad of works already out there. Some popular sources for freeform crochet inspiration are:

Tip 4: Start simple

Attempting to create a large, intricate, "perfect" art piece on your first attempt is a common error. Begin with simplicity. Sketch a circle on paper and populate it with your freeform crochet designs. Embellish a T-shirt by affixing crochet pieces to complement the garment's shape. Craft a modest 6" x 6" square wall hanging employing freeform

crochet methods. This type of contained project helps slim down the possibilities and makes freeform crochet less intimidating.

Tip 5: Let go of expectations, rules, and the end product

Freeform crochet allows you to create a variety of beautiful, wearable, and functional items. This particular craft niche emphasizes the creative process over the final product. Release any preconceived notions about your creation and immerse yourself in the evolution of your work. Embrace the playfulness of the craft!

Tip 6: Use yarn you like but aren’t in love with

Choosing yarn you enjoy working with is crucial for freeform crochet, as it adds excitement to the piece. However, it's also essential to allow yourself the freedom to experiment and make mistakes during the creative process, which means it might be wise to avoid using your most precious and expensive yarns in your initial freeform crochet projects.

Tip 7: Celebrate your favorite stitches

The beauty of freeform crochet lies in the freedom to use any stitch or combination of stitches without the need to maintain a specific count across rows. It eliminates the necessity for calculations, allowing work in any direction. Imagine creating a piece with five bullion stitches, followed by two popcorn stitches, all encircled by broomstick lace, or any other preferred stitch combination that appeals to you.

Tip 8: Consider multi-crafting

As you grow accustomed to freeform crochet, consider integrating various crafts into a single creation. Macrame, crochet, and knitting can all be combined effectively in a single piece. For excellent inspiration, explore the wearable art featured in the knitting and crochet sections of Julie Schafler Dale's book, "Art to Wear."

Stay Crafty, Opal
